An ALTA survey is a boundary survey prepared to a minimum standard that has been jointly prepared by the American Land Title Association and the American Congress on Surveying & Mapping. An ALTA survey plan will show the information normally shown on a boundary survey plan and other information normally shown on site or existing conditions plans such as pavement areas, parking, utilities, infrastructure and other physical improvements or legal restrictions on the property. ALTA surveys are normally prepared at the request of title insurance companies involved in loans on commercial properties.
The Massachusetts Land Court is one of the departments of the trial courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The court is unique among the courts of Massachusetts and among state courts in general because its subject-matter jurisdiction is limited to disputes involving real property.

In order to create a condominium the land and individual units are surveyed much like lots in a subdivision. A condominium plan is created and filed with the master deed and individual unit deeds. This plan will depict the dimensions of the units as well as the interior and exterior common area along with the parcel boundaries.
Newly constructed condominiums as well as existing multi-unit buildings being converted to condominiums must go through the condominium survey process during their creation.
